Answers:

What Do You Need to Borrow e-Books from Download Destination?

  • A valid Brandon Township Public Library Card.
  • A computer with Internet access (except for iPads, iPhones or Droid phones.  With these, you need to download the free Overdrive app from the Apple App store or Droid Marketplace.)
  • A compatible e-Reader or device that uses one of the required formats - EPUB, PDF or Kindle (Most Sony Readers, Nooks, Kobos, Kindles or Nook Colors are compatible, as well as iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch and Droid phones. )

If you have an ipad, iphone or droid phone:

  • Go to your app store/marketplace and download the free OverDrive app on your device.
  • Click on the "Get Books" button in the upper right corner of the OverDrive app screen.
  • Type in your zipcode. This should bring up a new screen with Download Destination.  Select it!
  • This takes you to the web page for OverDrive where you may search for e-books, place holds on them, and download them directly to your device without any computer necessary.
  • When your borrowing period is over, your device will tell you that your books have expired and give you the option to delete them.

For those who own a Kindle:

For those who own a Nook, Kobo, Sony e-reader, pandigital or other compatible e-reader:

  • Register the Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID you create.  Then plug in your eReader and register it.
NOTE:  If you own an original Nook and are having problems authorizing your ADE software, please see these instructions.
  • Browse for titles by viewing the book covers on the front page or go to the Digital Media Search box and select the link for Advanced Search.
  • Use the pull-down menu on the Advanced Search page to limit your search to ePub format.  You may also limit it to those items currently available for download.
  • When you find the title you want, click on the “add to bookbag” link.  If it is already checked out to someone else, you may place it on reserve.
  • If the title is available, click “Proceed to Checkout.”  If you are already logged in, you will be asked to confirm your checkout.

How can I read PDF eBooks on my iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch?

The OverDrive mobile app for iOS does not support PDFs, but we have had patrons who have reported success using a third-party app known as Bluefire Reader.   The Bluefire Reader app and their instructions for downloading library eBooks onto your iPad can be found at  http://www.bluefirereader.com/help/libraryBooks.html.

Both of these programs need to be authorized with an Adobe ID (your email address and a password). If you have not already set one up in the past, you'll be asked to do so during the installation process for the software. Please make sure to use the same information for the two programs (Bluefire Reader and Adobe Digital Editions).

After these programs are installed, you can log in to your account on the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services website and download your book. Then follow the instructions on the Bluefire Reader page to use iTunes to transfer the file to the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad.

Please note that this process is only necessary to read library eBooks that are in the Adobe PDF format. Those that are in the Adobe EPUB format can be downloaded directly to your iPad using the OverDrive Media Console app. (No syncing with iTunes on your computer required.)

You'll need to install the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad (available from the App Store), and the free Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer. If you've downloaded library eBooks in the past, you may already have this program, but if not, it is a free download available from  http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions. (Note that this is a different program than the Adobe Reader software used to read PDF files. This separate program supports the limited checkout periods needed for library eBook files.)
